Microsoft Surface Laptop repair

Surface Laptops are slim, light and built with few screws, which makes them pleasant to use but awkward to repair without the right approach. We repair them in our workshop, from cracked touchscreens to laptops that won’t charge or power on.

Common faults we fix

  • Cracked touchscreens – the glass and display are bonded together, so the whole screen assembly is replaced.
  • Won’t charge – faults with the Surface Connect port, the USB-C port or the charging circuit. A faulty Surface charger is also common, so please bring yours.
  • Battery wear and swelling – short battery life, or a battery that pushes up the keyboard.
  • Won’t turn on – power faults traced on the motherboard.
  • Keyboard and trackpad faults – including liquid damage to the Alcantara or metal keyboard deck.
  • SSD failures – disk errors or a laptop that boots to a recovery screen.

How Surface Laptops come apart

Older Surface Laptops were sealed with adhesive and were notoriously difficult to open. Microsoft has made each generation easier, and the Surface Laptop 7 can be opened from the underside with screws. Even so, the screen is a fused glass-and-panel unit, the keyboard is part of the top case on most models, and ribbon cables are fine and easy to damage. We know where the clips and adhesive are on each model, which avoids accidental damage to the screen or battery.

Snapdragon models and your data

The Surface Laptop 7 and 13-inch models run on Qualcomm Snapdragon chips with Windows on Arm. They behave like any other Windows laptop for repair, but they come with BitLocker device encryption switched on in most cases. Before you drop off a Surface for a repair that might involve the SSD, make sure you can find your BitLocker recovery key in your Microsoft account. Most recent Surface Laptops use a removable M.2 SSD, so if the laptop won’t start we can usually work on the drive directly, and our laptop data recovery service can help if the drive itself has failed.

FAQs

Is it cheaper than replacing the Surface?

For most screen, battery, charging and board faults, yes. Laptop assessment is £45 + VAT and we give you a fixed quote before starting.

My Surface won’t charge. Is it the charger?

Often. A light on the Surface Connect plug that flashes or stays off points to the charger. We test both so you only pay for what’s broken.

Do you do same-day repairs?

For many faults, yes, depending on parts. All repairs carry a 90-day warranty.
