The Surface Book was unusual: a laptop whose screen lifts off to become a tablet, with batteries in both halves and, on many models, a graphics chip in the base. Microsoft ended the line after the Surface Book 3, so every one is now out of warranty. They are fiddly to open, but most faults can be repaired.
Common faults we fix
- Cracked screen or failed touch – the display is bonded to the tablet half, so we replace the full screen assembly and test the pen and touch.
- Won’t detach or base not detected – the electronic latch, the connector between the halves or the base board itself can fail.
- Swollen battery – look for a bulging screen, a lifted keyboard or the halves no longer sitting flush. Stop using it and get it checked.
- Not charging – a worn Surface Connect port, a faulty charger or a power fault in either half.
- Keyboard and trackpad faults – dead keys or an unresponsive trackpad, often caused by a fault in the base.
- Graphics problems – on models with a dedicated GPU, games and creative apps crash or the GPU goes missing.
- SSD failure – slow starts, disk errors or a Surface stuck on the logo.

Two halves, two batteries
A Surface Book has a battery in the screen half and another in the keyboard base. Either can wear out or swell, and the symptoms are different. A failing screen battery shows up as short run time when detached; a failing base battery often shows up as the laptop draining while connected. We test both before quoting, so you only replace what has actually failed. See laptop battery replacement for more on battery safety.
Is it still worth repairing?
That depends on the model and what you use it for. The original Surface Book does not meet Windows 11’s processor requirements, and Windows 10 support ended in October 2025, so a big repair on one of those is worth weighing up. A Surface Book 3 is a different story: it runs Windows 11 and is still a capable machine, so a screen, battery or charging repair is usually good value.
Laptop assessment is £45 + VAT and the quote is fixed, so you can make the decision with the numbers in front of you.
FAQs
Can you get data off a Surface Book that won’t start?
Usually. If the SSD is still working we can copy your files off. See laptop data recovery.
My Surface Book says the keyboard base isn’t connected. Is that serious?
It normally means the halves are not communicating. It can be a dirty connector, a latch fault or a base fault, and we will test which.
