The XPS is Dell’s premium laptop, with thin aluminium bodies, near-borderless screens and tightly packed internals. Dell briefly moved its premium line to the Dell Premium name in 2025 before bringing XPS back for 2026, so there are now several design generations in use. We repair all of them, including faults on the motherboard itself.
Common faults we fix
- Cracked or flickering screens – including OLED and touch panels, which are usually replaced as a full display assembly.
- Touchpad problems – unresponsive or phantom clicks; on recent XPS models the haptic touchpad is hidden in the glass palm rest.
- Swollen battery – a raised touchpad, a lifted base or a keyboard that feels uneven. Stop using it and book it in.
- Keyboard faults – dead keys, sticking keys and failed backlights.
- Not charging over USB-C – worn ports or a fault in the charging circuit.
- Overheating and fan noise – a full clean and fresh thermal paste.
- Liquid damage – cleaned and repaired at board level. See laptop liquid damage repair.
Models we repair
- XPS 14 and XPS 16 (2026) with Intel Core Ultra Series 3
- Dell Premium laptops (2025)
- XPS 13, XPS 14 and XPS 16 (2024) with Intel Core Ultra, and XPS 13 with Snapdragon X
- XPS 13, XPS 15 and XPS 17 (roughly 2019–2023)
- Older XPS and 2-in-1 models – see our older Dell models page
The service tag on the base of the laptop tells us the exact model and original specification, so it helps to have it handy when you get in touch.
A different design from 2024
The 2024 XPS 13, 14 and 16 changed the layout considerably, following the earlier XPS 13 Plus: a capacitive touch row replaced the physical function keys, the keyboard runs edge to edge, and the touchpad is invisible under a single sheet of glass. They look clean, but it means some faults behave differently. A dead function row or touchpad is often a sensor or cable issue rather than a keyboard fault, and a spill can affect the touch row and the touchpad together. We test each part separately so you are not quoted for more than you need.
Batteries on older XPS 15 and 17
We see a steady stream of older XPS 15 and XPS 17 laptops with swollen batteries. As the battery expands it pushes up against the touchpad, which may stop clicking properly before anything else seems wrong. Swollen lithium batteries can be a fire risk, so do not keep charging one. See laptop battery replacement.
FAQs
Can you upgrade the SSD in my XPS?
On most XPS models, yes. Memory is soldered on many recent ones, so it cannot be added later. We will tell you what your model allows.
Is board-level repair possible on an XPS?
Yes. We regularly repair power and charging faults on XPS motherboards. See laptop motherboard repair.
What does it cost?
Laptop assessment is £45 + VAT and you get a fixed quote before any work. More on our Dell brand page.
