Lenovo ThinkPad repair

ThinkPads are built to be used hard and kept for years, which is exactly why so many end up on our bench rather than in a recycling bin. Whether it is one laptop or a whole office’s worth, we fix keyboards, screens, charging faults and motherboards, and we understand that a business machine needs to come back with its data and settings intact.

Common faults we fix

  • Keyboard and TrackPoint faults – worn keys, liquid damage, a drifting TrackPoint or dead mouse buttons.
  • Not charging over USB-C – worn ports, failed chargers and docks, or a fault in the charging circuit on the board.
  • Cracked or failed screens – including touch, privacy-filter and OLED panels on X1 models.
  • Swollen or worn batteries – short run time, a lifting keyboard or the base bowing out.
  • No power – diagnosed at component level, not just swapped for a new motherboard.
  • Fan noise and overheating – particularly on P-series mobile workstations under heavy loads.
  • SSD failure – replacements and upgrades, with careful handling of encrypted drives.

Models we repair

  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon, Gen 9 to Gen 13
  • ThinkPad X1 Yoga and X1 2-in-1
  • ThinkPad T14, T14s and T16
  • ThinkPad E14 and E16
  • ThinkPad L-series
  • ThinkPad P-series mobile workstations, including P1, P14s and P16
  • Older models: earlier X1 Carbon generations, T480 and T490, X-series and IBM-era ThinkPads – see our older Lenovo models page

The machine type and model number on the base label tells us exactly which part fits, which matters because ThinkPad screens and keyboards vary between configurations of the same model.

Keyboards and the X1 Carbon

ThinkPad keyboards are well loved, so owners notice quickly when one starts to fail. On the T and E-series, the keyboard is a separate part and replacement is usually straightforward. On the X1 Carbon it is fixed into the top case along with the palm rest, so the job takes longer and costs more. Spills are the most common cause, and the spill-resistant design buys time but does not make it waterproof. If something has gone into the keys, switch off and get it looked at.

Business fleets and encrypted drives

Most company ThinkPads use BitLocker. After a motherboard or security chip repair, Windows will usually ask for the recovery key, so make sure your IT team has it before the laptop comes in. We can work with your IT contact directly and handle repairs for several machines at once. See our business computer repair page.

We also see a lot of older ThinkPads still doing useful work. A fresh battery, a new SSD and a clean-up can give a T-series years more life.

FAQs

Can you repair a ThinkPad that has the supervisor password set?

We can carry out hardware repairs, but BIOS passwords should be removed by the owner or their IT department. Bring proof of ownership if you need help. See laptop password removal.

Do you repair IBM ThinkPads?

Yes, where parts are available. Laptop assessment is £45 + VAT and the quote is fixed, so there is no risk in asking.

Do you fix other Lenovo laptops?

Yes. See our Lenovo brand page or the laptop repair hub.
